Men’s Basketball Tripped Up on the Road by Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Looking to bounce-back after a Skyline Conference loss in their last outing, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team (6-9, 2-4) headed north to Purchase College for another league battle on Wednesday night. The North Division's first-place Panthers came out on top, however, as they held a 24-point halftime lead and never looked back to hand the Bears their second-straight defeat.

How It Happened
Captain Dimitri Sirakis (Oakland Gardens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) drained a trey three minutes into the game to bring the Bears within three (6-3), but that was the closest they would come all night. The Panthers followed with a 16-4 run, capped by a Maxx Miller layup, to pull away at 22-7 with 11:43 before the half.

The Bears came within 10 a couple of times but Purchase closed the first on an 18-4 stretch that extended their advantage to 24 (49-25) at the break. SJC's offense was stymied to the tune of 25.7 percent shooting in the frame leading to a large deficit.

Purchase extended the lead to 30-plus before the halfway point of the second as they maintained control throughout. Five Panthers scored in double-figures while Miller led with 18 points and fellow senior standout Elijah Lott notched a triple-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists lead his team to a 5-1 record in Skyline play (10-5 overall).

For the Bears

  • Senior Stephane Etheart (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Junior Zach MacDonnell (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) dropped nine points in just seven minutes of action shooting an almost perfect 4-5 (1-1 from three).
  • Sirakis finished with eight on 2-4 shooting while Chris Mikos (Freehold, N.J./Saint John Vianney) had nine points and five boards off the bench.
