Maritime Downs Men’s Basketball at The Hill Center

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team (6-12, 2-7) welcomed Maritime College to The Hill Center on Thursday night for a Skyline Conference battle as they looked to snap a four-game losing streak.

Sophomore Chris Mikos (Freehold, N.J./Saint John Vianney) recorded his first collegiate double-double, but the Privateers (8-11, 4-6) downed the Bears, 85-68, as red-hot shooting from long range led to their eighth win of the season.

How It Happened

The opening minutes of the game were high scoring and tightly contested as a nifty reverse layup from Frank Reali (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) brought the Bears within two (10-8) about five minutes into the contest. Maritime built an eight-point lead thanks to Brendan McGovern's hot shooting, but the Bears battled and cut the deficit to three (25-22) after Sebastien Etheart (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) found a cutting Matt McQuillen (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) for two (8:51).

Etheart followed with a triple on the next possession to knot the score at 25, but Maritime's shooters didn't let the gridlock last as they jumped back ahead and used 9-20 shooting from deep to establish a 38-35 halftime edge. McGovern poured in 14 first-half points (4-10 3FG) while Mike Regan buried four of his five three-point attempts for 12 points at the break.

The Privateers went off for eight unanswered points to open the second building a double-digit lead (46-35) early in the frame. Maritime didn't let up as Chris Ruscillo converted an and-one with just under 12 minutes left to extend their lead to 56-41. That was the turning points of the game as SJC never came back within single digits en route to a lopsided loss which broke a 6-6 gridlock in the all-time series between the two teams.
