Men’s Soccer Thwarted at Kean in Non-Conference Road Test

UNION, N.J. — In the second of three straight road games, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team traveled to Union, New Jersey on Sunday to take on Kean University. The Cougars took a 3-0 lead into the half, and exploded for five goals in the second to seal the deal on their third victory of the young season.

How It Happened

  • Kean put the pressure on from the start, out-shooting SJC 3-0 in the first 18 minutes, then breaking the tie in the 21st minute when Danny Guillen knocked in a rebound off of a deflected save.
  • Two minutes later the Cougars padded the lead, as Kamsi Udodi assisted Erick Reyes to capitalize on a two-on-one opportunity.
  • Reyes scored again in the 30th minute, beating his defender in a one-on-one to tally the final score of the first half.
  • Sophomore Julian Rodriguez (Whitestone, N.Y./Bayside) manned the net for the Bears in the first half, allowing three goals while saving four. However, he was subbed out for the second half in favor of freshman Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland).
  • Oliveros allowed goals in the 55th, 63rd, 66th, and 71st (2) minutes, two apiece to Michael Vargas and Jake Santos. Despite this, Oliveros came away with five saves of his own in the loss.

For the Bears

  • Senior Cesar Oviedo (South Ozone Park, N.Y./Christ the King) fired the Bears only shot on goal, coming in the 34th minute. SJC compiled a total of three shots on the day, as opposed to Kean's 27.
  • Rodriguez and Oliveros combined for nine saves, while Kean had one over the course of the game.

The Bear Facts

  • This is the first meeting between the two programs. Kean competes in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
  • Eight is the most goals allowed by the Bears since 2015, in a 10-3 loss to Yeshiva (Oct. 16).
