Early Goals Sees Men’s Soccer Fall to NJCU in Season Opener

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team began their 2019 season with a loss in the Montclair State Invitational to New Jersey City University, 2-0, on Friday night.

How it Happened

The Gothic Knights took an early 1-0 lead when defender Ron James found the back of the net at the three-minute mark. Two minutes later, Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) took the first shot of the game but couldn't get it passed NJCU goalkeeper Aldahir Cazun. NJCU doubled their lead to 2-0 with a goal in the tenth minute. The Bears had the opportunity to cut the deficit back down to one when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Sophomore Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) had his penalty saved by Cazun.

NJCU outshot the Bears 7-2 in the second period with Georges taking both shots for St. Joseph's. In the 53rd minute, goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) saved the only NJCU shot on target in the half from Edric De Paula.
