Mastoras and Sanchez Score as Men’s Soccer Falls to Baruch

NEW YORK — Second-half goals by Thomas Mastoras (Bayside, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and William Sanchez (Jamaica, N.Y./Bayside) weren't enough as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (0-3) was defeated by Baruch College (1-1), 4-2, on Wednesday evening in Randall's Island.

How it Happened

In a mostly uneventful first half, the Bears took two shots but were unable to find the back of the net on either attempt. With five minutes remaining before the intermission, Baruch scored to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats began the second period taking five shots in five minutes. In the 51st minute, Baruch doubled their lead to 2-0. Four minutes later, a foul in the 18-yard box off a Bears' corner kick led to Mastoras converting the ensuing penalty; cutting the deficit to 2-1. Baruch attempted an immediate shot following the restart but goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) came up with the first of five saves in the half. The hosts regained the two-goal lead in the 65th minute, 3-1. Baruch added to their lead in the 83rd minute, giving them the 4-1 advantage. With three minutes before the final whistle, Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) found fellow sophomore Sanchez off a corner kick for the Bears' second goal of the game.

For the Bears

  • Sanchez's goal was the first in his collegiate career.
  • Mastoras, Sepulveda and Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) each took two shots.
  • Sepulveda recorded his first point of the season and ninth assist of his career.
  • Oliveros stopped six Bearcat shots in the game.
