Sepulveda's First Career Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer To First Win of the Season Over York

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Joseph Sepulveda's (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) three-goal performance at the SJC Invitational contributed to the first win of the season for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (1-3) as they defeated York College (0-3), 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

Freshman midfielder Joao Gavilanes (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Francis Lewis) netted his first career goal in the tenth minute to open up the scoring for the Bears. The lead doubled four minutes later when Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) found Sepulveda for the first of his three goals in the contest. Three minutes before the halftime whistle, York cut the Bears' lead to 2-1.

The Cardinals drew level six minutes into the second half. St. Joseph's responded in the 56th minute with a Sepulveda goal on a through ball to take the lead for good, 3-2. Sepulveda completed his first career hat trick in the 73rd minute when he took advantage of a misplayed ball by the York goalkeeper, putting the Bears up 4-2. The lead increased to 5-2 on Abdul Altabchi's (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) first career goal in the 87th minute.

  • Senior Thomas Mastoras (Bayside, N.Y./Francis Lewis) took four shots, recording two shots on goal.
