Men’s Soccer Falls Flat Against Catholic

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (1-4) concluded its participation at the SJC Invitational with a 7-0 loss to Catholic University (3-1) on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Cardinals took four shots in the opening five minutes. Catholic's Darius Siahpoosh scored the first goal of the game off a rebound, 1-0. Two minutes later, the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead. Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) attempted to cut the Bears' deficit in the 15th minute but his shot went wide. Catholic increased their lead to 3-0 on Siahpoosh's second goal in the 19th minute. The Cardinals netted their fourth goal three minutes later. In the 29th minute, Catholic again added to their lead, 5-0.

Catholic scored three minutes into the second half to go up 6-0. Bears goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) stopped a Cardinal shot five minutes later for his first save of the period. Kelvin Garcia (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) found two scoring opportunities for the Bears in the 68th minute and again in the 70th but could not find the back of the net. The Cardinals went up 7-0 with three minutes remaining before the final whistle.

  • Of the five shots taken in the game, Georges and Garcia each took two.
  • Garcia and freshman Joao Gavilanes (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Francis Lewis) both attempted a shot on goal.
  • Oliveros recorded ten saves, two shy of his season-high.
