Men’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Night with Three-Goal Victory Against Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team celebrated Senior Night, three seniors—Matthews Avendano (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) and Thomas Mastoras (Bayside, N.Y./Francis Lewis)—each played a role in the team's 4-1 victory against Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday night from Aviator Field. The win gives the Bears a 3-6 Skyline record (5-10-1 overall) while the Gryphons fall to 3-6-1 in conference play (6-9-1 overall).

Along with Avendano, Georges and Mastoras, the team also recognized Kelvin Garcia (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Cathedral Prep), Mohamed Ndiaye Jr. (Senegal, West Africa/Washington Irving) and Christopher Okafor (London, England/Bonus Pastor Catholic).

How it Happened

Less than 90 seconds after the opening whistle, Avendano scored his first goal on a pass by Mastoras. The Gryphons immediately responded with a goal of their own in the third minute off the foot of Pacqui Pascual. While the score stayed level throughout the first half, the Bears did not take their foot off the gas; firing off 12 shots, six more than the visitors and five by Mastoras.

The go-ahead goal was scored by Georges in the 54th minute; his second on the year. Five minutes later, Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) netted the first of his two goals of the match when his chip shot from the left side found the far end of the goal, increasing the St. Joseph's lead to 3-1. The 4-1 win was sealed when Mastoras added to his assist tally by providing Sepulveda with a long through ball that was chipped into the top right of the net.

For the Bears

• The Bears fired off 29 shots in the match compared to the seven by Sarah Lawrence.
• Mastoras and Sepulveda each had nine shots in the game. Mastoras' two assists puts him at 15 in his career, the most assists in program history.
• Sepulveda's two goals brings him to a team-leading 13 goals. This was his third multi-goal game of the season.
• Goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) had two saves.
