Men’s Soccer Falls to New Jersey City in Season Opener

PATCHOGUE, N.Y — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team played its season opener on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex, their first game since October 2019.  Freshman Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) scored his first goal of the year however it proved to be the only goal scored by the Bears (0-1) as they came on the wrong end of a 4-1 result against New Jersey City University (2-0).

How it Happened

NJCU's Jaime Bimboza beat a couple of defenders and found the far post for the game's opening goal ten minutes in. Shortly after, the Gothic Knights — struggling to get out of the SJC attacking third — lost possession on a Matthew Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) tackle that found the foot of Mario Giugliano (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy). The senior played a ball to an open Cano who rifled his shot into the upper left corner of the goal, from well beyond the 18-yard box, to draw the match level.

The Gothic Knights regained the lead in the 31st minute, adding a third goal in the 39th to end a high-scoring first half with a two-goal advantage, 3-1. New Jersey City walked away with the 4-1 victory when Maximo Vargas' shot from the top of the box struck the lower right corner with 10 minutes remaining.
