Men’s Soccer Battles SJC Long Island to Scoreless Draw in Skyline Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) and St. Joseph's College (Long Island) men's soccer teams played 110 minutes of scoreless action on Tuesday evening at Aviator Field in Skyline Conference action.

How it Happened

  • With the wind in their favor in the first half, the Golden Eagles (1-2-1, 0-1-1) outshot the Bears 7-0 over the opening 45 but none of their attempts found their way on goal.
  • The second stanza saw a balanced five shots apiece and both keepers making two saves, including an Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) save in the final minute of regulation. The Bears managed to gain some opportunities with direct kicks from just outside the box, but were unable to convert. A shot by Eric Santiago Torres (Woodside, N.Y./Forest Hills) in the 82nd minute provided one of the best chances for the Bears, prompting a diving save by the Long Island keeper to push the shot destined for the top netting over the bar.
  • In the second overtime session, Long Island managed to put one into the back of the net from close range with a minute and a half to play, but it was waved off as the assistant referee raised the offsides flag up and the game eventually ended in a draw.

For the Bears

  • Oliveros finished with four saves for his third career shutout.
  • Santiago Torres and Menzi Simelane (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians College) both fired two shots apiece.
