Men’s Tennis Opens Season With 8-1 Triumph Over York

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Sophomore Vaso Vukosavovic (Clifton, N.J./St. Andrews School) won the top singles match at love as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team swept the doubles matches and took five straight-set singles victories to cruise to an 8-1 non-conference victory over York College on Saturday afternoon in the first match of their 2017 campaign.

How it Happened

  • The Bears swept all three opening doubles matches. Vaso Vukosavovic teamed up with Kevin Caicedo for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Shivam Ghai and Carlos Mayorga secured an 8-5 win in the No. 2 position. Matthew Smith and Alec Smalley completed the sweep of pairs winning at love at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
  • Vukosavovic dominated in the top singles match and didn't drop a game winning in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0. Smith clinched the overall victory for St. Joseph's downing his opponent at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
  • Ghai won his first collegiate singles match with a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 3 position. Caicedo and Mayorga both won the second set at love to clinch their matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
  • Smalley dropped the opening set of his match at No. 4 singles, 6-3, but came back to win the second set by the same margin. With a light rain beginning to fall, they played the third set as a tiebreaker, and Smalley was edged out 7-5 to salvage the lone point for York.

The Bear Facts

  • St. Joseph's wins their season opener for the first time in their 10-year history. It is also the first time the team has been above .500.
  • The 8-1 victory is just the third win in team history of seven points or better, following a 9-0 shutout of Sage Colleges last April.
  • The Bears have now won two straight over York in the series that the Cardinals lead 6-2.
