BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite setting their highest season point total, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (0-9) came up short at home, dropping consecutive sets (3-0) (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) to York College of New York.
Several players amassed season highs in multiple statistical categories for the Bears. Junior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Peter's) had a season-high eight kills and one block solo. Freshman Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bishop Loughlin) crushed a season-high five kills, two service aces, three blocks and one dig. Sophomore Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Peter's) slammed a season-high five kills and registered five digs. Senior Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph by the Sea) distributed a season-high 16 assists, followed by two service aces and four digs. Sophomore Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y. / Christ the King) pounded two kills, one service ace and stepped in for nine digs.
York College (3-11) was led by Kevin Campbell, who smashed a game-high 13 kills and three digs. Wolf Metellus slammed four kills, one service ace, and a team-high five digs. Akeem George had four kills and three service aces.
A 3-3 tie began the first set, but the Cardinals ran off five straight points to take an 8-3 lead. A pair of kills and two service aces by St. Rose-Cuffy helped propel the Bears during a 13-5 run to take their largest lead, 16-13. However, a 10-0 run by the Cardinals gave them a 23-16 advantage. The Bears scored their highest tally in one set all season (21) but York took the first set, 25-21. The Cardinals held St. Joseph's to only 11 points in the second frame but the Bears would be re-energized in the third.
After taking a 1-4 lead, the Bears allowed York to crawl back and tie the set, 8-8. The Cards soon took a resounding 21-12 lead but the Bears still managed to score multiple times before falling in the set, 25-19.
