Men’s Volleyball Unable to Hand Medgar Evers First Loss

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (0-8) was fell to undefeated borough rivals Medgar Evers College (5-0) in straight sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-21) on Tuesday night at The Hill Center.

How It Happened

The Cougars used a high-powered attack to cruise through the opening two frames and while holding the Bears to just five kills.

The Bears offense came alive in a third set that featured 12 ties and seven lead changes with SJC battling to force an extra frame. A 4-0 spurt powered by a pair of kills from Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) gave SJC their largest lead of the match, 9-6, before the visitors responded with four straight to regain the lead.

With the set knotted at 14-all, Medgar scored three unanswered to take the lead for good as the Bears could only pull back within two, 21-19, and later wiped out two match points before falling 25-21.

The Cougars finished the match out-hitting the Bears 42-13 in kills and landed 13 aces.

For the Bears

  • Tim Driscoll paced the offense with six kills, a pair of aces and four blocks.
  • Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) contributed four kills and an ace and a block, while leading the defense with six digs.
  • Timothy Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) distributed 12 assists with two digs.
