Driscoll and Salomons Combine for 31 Points as Men’s Volleyball Sweeps York

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Senior Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) had 13 kills and four aces while classmate Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) totaled 12 kills and two blocks leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (4-15) to a sweep at York College (N.Y.) on Wednesday.

SJC downed the Cardinals (3-17) in three high-scoring sets (25-21, 25-20, 27-25) for their third-straight victory — their longest win streak since the 2015 season.

How It Happened
Driscoll slammed a kill putting the Bears up by three early in the first, but a St. Joseph's error brought York within one (9-8) soon after. Back-and-forth play continued as neither side led by more than four until another Bear error tied the score at 16. However, a 5-0 spurt put the visitors in the driver's seat and they closed the set with three unanswered points to go ahead 1-0.

A Kevin Campbell kill had the Cardinals ahead 12-6 in the second as they looked to even the match. They continued their solid play maintaining the advantage after a block assist from Akil Vaughn and Mambe Koureissi kept the lead at five (17-12). The Bears didn't quit though, erupting for a 13-3 run behind three kills and a block from Salomons to win the frame.

The third set featured even more back-and-forth action as Salomons hit yet another kill to tie the score at 10 with the Bears looking for the sweep. SJC gained some separation after a 9-3 rally capped off by a Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) block for a 19-13 edge.

St. Rose-Cuffy fired an ace to give the Bears match point at 24-18, but York kept fighting scoring six-straight points with four coming on kills from Campbell for a 24-24 gridlock. The Bears went up one then allowed York to tie it again but finished things off on a Driscoll kill and a bad set to secure their fourth win of 2019.

For the Bears

  • Driscoll (13 kills, four aces) added six digs on defense and Salomons (12 kills, two blocks) hit an impressive .480 leading the Bears to a season-high .240 hitting percentage as a team on the night.
  • Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) brought up a match-high 12 digs as well as three kills and a helper.
  • Timothy Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) dished out a match-high 24 assists with four digs.
