Men’s Volleyball Defeats Pratt to Pick Up First Win of Season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Seniors Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) and Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) combined for 20 kills to lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-11, 25-9, 24-26, 25-16) non-conference victory over Clinton Hill rivals Pratt Institute on Friday evening at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears (1-2) dominated in the first two frames on the strength on 16 service aces and a combined .520 hitting with Eddy leading the attack with seven kills through two sets. The hosts never trailed and held the Cannoneers (0-3) to just 20 points in two sets.

Pratt took their first lead of the match early in the third and led by as many as three, 7-4, before the Bears responded with a 9-2 run to go back on top. The navy and gray maintained that cushion until the late stages of the frame before Pratt closed out the set with a 10-2 run to force an extra frame.

St. Joseph's asserted their dominance again in the fourth building an early 10-4 lead and coasted to a 25-16 set win to close out their first win of the season.

For the Bears

  • Eddy racked up a team-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting night and finished one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs. He also served up four aces.
  • St. Rose-Cuffy also hit .500 and finished with nine kills and one block.
  • Freshman Ramizjon Khudoyorov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) had five kills, three aces, five digs, and a block.
  • Senior Israel Bautista (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills) dished out 24 assists and directed the offense to a season-high .321 hitting.
  • Freshman Kristopher Parbs-Slawson (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) served up 10 aces to lead five different Bears to combined for 22 aces on the night.
  • Freshman Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) put away his first collegiate kill and added a pair of digs.
