BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Junior Victoria Mahoney (Allenwood, N.J./Saint John Vianney) struck out eight in the opener and sophomore Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) batted 3-for-3 in game two, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team dropped both ends of their Skyline Conference doubleheader to sister school St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on a glorious spring Saturday afternoon at Gil Hodges Field.

Game 1: SJC Long Island 3, SJC Brooklyn 0

  • Victoria Mahoney and Golden Eagle starter Theresa Cardello entertained with a pitchers' duel, as both worked on one-hitters through four innings.
  • The visitors broke through in the sixth with Lindsay Smocer's two-out single through the left side delivering a pair of runs. Another two-out knock from Zoe Kelly to opposite field in the seventh tacked on an insurance run.
  • Mahoney matched her high with eight strikeouts, but her counterpart Cardello struck out 12 and allowed just two hits in the shutout effort.

Game 2: SJC Long Island 9, SJC Brooklyn 0 (6 innings)

  • The Golden Eagles opened the second inning with a walk and a single to gain runners in scoring position setting up Jillian McFadzen for a two-run single that opened the scoring.
  • A leadoff home run for Ashley Accardi highlighted a three-run fourth for Long Island but the Bears had their best scoring threat in the home half of the inning on back-to-back leadoff singles by Sarah Kampuries (Ozone Park, N.Y./James Madison) and Wainwright but came away empty-handed.
  • A bloop single with two outs fell to the left field grass and allowed two more runs to score in a five-run sixth inning that put the visitors over the run-rule.
