Softball Drops a Pair to Chatham and Elizabethtown on Final Day of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team dropped the final pair games in the Sunshine State; falling to Chatham College, 4-3, and Elizabethtown College, 12-4 in five innings, on Sunday. The Bears end their participation at The Spring Games with an even 4-4 record.

How it Happened vs. Chatham

The Cougars (1-0) scored on a sac fly in the first, giving them an early lead. The Bears quickly responded in the top of the second when Brianna Baglino (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) drove home a run and Jessica Vento (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored on a Chatham error. Baglino scored on a Vivian Tomovich single (San Diego, Calif./Serra), increasing the SJC advantage to 3-1.

An RBI grounder by Carly Clark cut Chatham's deficit to one in the bottom of the third. The score remained 3-2 until the Cougars brought in a pair of runs in the sixth inning as the Cougars received some timely hitting with three-straight hits with two outs, taking a 4-3 lead.

Emily Burroughs (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) singled in the top of the seventh with Casey Bennett (Sacramento, Calif./Bella Vista) reaching on an error shortly thereafter to put runners on the corners. The rally would fall short however as a runner was picked off at third and a fly out to end the game left the tying runner stranded at second.

How it Happened vs. Elizabethtown

After senior pitcher Madison Erhardt (Baltimore, Md./Bulaney) retired the side in the top of the first, Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) doubled to left field to begin the Bears' half of the frame. A double by Isabelle Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored Trani for the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second, the Blue Jays (2-2) got on the board in the third; exploding for five runs with Kaitlyn Witmer and Lindsey Fasolo bringing home two runs each. The Bears retaliated in the bottom of the third when a double by Burroughs scored Vanessa Quigley (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp). SJC narrowed the gap to 5-4 on sacrifices by Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) and Calabrese.

Elizabethtown tacked on an additional five runs on four hits in the top of the fourth, extending their lead to six, 10-4. The Blue Jay advantage grew to 12-4 in the fifth. Down to their final out in the bottom of the fifth, Calabrese and Bedrin singled. Alexis Buchanan (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta) reached on an error by the Blue Jay shortstop to load the bases. However, the runners were left stranded on a game-ending flyout.
