Softball Rallies to Defeat Old Westbury for Fifth-Straight Win Play Video

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit, defeating SUNY College at Old Westbury, 5-2, on Monday evening at the FSC Softball Field.

The Bears (5-2, 4-2 Skyline) sweep the three-game series with the Panthers (0-3, 0-3) and extend their winning streak to five.

Junior Ashleigh Hartwig (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B), junior Vivian Tomovich (2-3, R, 2B) and freshman Arianna Heinsch (3-3, RBI, R, SB) all logged multi-hit efforts. Junior Jessica Mecham (7 IP, 2 ER, K) went the distance in the circle and improved to 3-1.

How it Happened

After being dominated in Saturday's doubleheader, it was the Panthers who scored first to take their first lead of the series, scoring solo runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead.

The Bears struggled to get the bats going in the early frames but got on the board in the fourth when Heinsch knocked her second hit of the game, legging out an infield single to score Tomovich to cut the deficit to 2-1.

SJC applied the pressure in the sixth. Tomovich started the rally with a one-out double and Heinsch lined a shot back to the pitcher to cap a 3-for-3 game and later stole second. A walk loaded the bases, but the Panthers managed to get a force out at home to bring about two outs, still clinging on to a one-run lead. But a wild pitch would tie the game at 2-all and with the bases loaded again, Nicole Trani (0-2, RBI) was hit by a pitch to bring home the go-ahead run and Hartwig lined a single to tack on two more insurance runs for the 5-2 final.

Old Westbury would get runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, but the defense turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and seal the comeback.

On Deck

After taking this weekend off from competition for Easter, the Bears return to the diamond on Saturday, April 10 to host Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline doubleheader starting at noon at the SJC Outdoor Complex. Live stats and video will be available on SJCBears.com
