Trani Homers Again as Softball Drops Pair to Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) extended her league lead in home runs, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team was turned away by Manhattanville College, 14-1 and 7-0, in a key Skyline doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in the final weekend of the regular season.

Junior Vivian Tomovich (San Diego, Calif./Serra) knocked three hits on the afternoon to lead the Bears at the plate.

The losses for the Bears (17-8, 12-8) set up a must-win game one in tomorrow's regular-season finale to extend their season and clinch a spot in the 2021 Skyline Conference Softball Championship. The Valiants (16-3, 11-3), who already clinched a playoff berth entering the weekend, locked up second place and extended their win streak to seven games.

Game 1: Manhattanville 14, St. Joseph's 1 (5 innings)

  • In the first meeting between the programs, Manhattanville jumped on the Bears early with a big seven-run first highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Jaclyn Deluca and Abby Tanuma.
  • Trani opened the second with a leadoff solo shot to left and the lone run for the Bears on the day. It was her sixth home run of the season, doubling up a six-way tie for second at three.
  • The Valiants scored a run in the second before adding five more in the fourth as they finished with 19 hits in the opener.
  • Maeve McKeon went 2-for-2 at the dish, and Vanessa Quigley (1-1) and Tomovich (1-3) accounted for the other base knocks for the Bears in defeat.
  • Jessica Mecham (7-4) was tagged with the loss in the circle in her lone start this season where she didn't go the distance.

Game 2: Manhattanville 7, St. Joseph's 0

  • The Valiants scored early again with two runs in the first which would prove to be the difference as the Bears were held scoreless for the first time this season.
  • St. Joseph's managed to get the leadoff batter on base in the first, third and fourth innings, but came away empty handed against reigning Skyline Pitcher of the Week Charli Shinstine who held the Bears to just four hits and fanned 12.
  • After a scoreless second, the Valiants slowly pulled away with solo runs in the third, fifth, and sixth and a pair in the fourth.
  • Tomovich went 2-for-3 for the only multi-hit game for the Bears. Arianna Heinsch (1-2) knocked a single in the fifth.
  • Ashleigh Hartwig also collected a hit, but also saw her streak without a strikeout end at 205 consecutive plate appearances dating back to March 30, 2019 — 46 games without a strikeout.
  • Allison Kaspar (5-4) went five innings in a losing effort in the circle.
