Softball Falls to Top Seed Farmingdale State For First Loss in Skyline Championship

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —  The No. 5-seeded St. Joseph's University Brooklyn softball team suffered an 8-0 loss in five innings to No. 1-seeded Farmingdale State College on Thursday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Bears (23-13) still remain alive in the double-elimination portion of the 2022 Skyline Conference Softball Championship.

How it Happened

St. Joseph's threatened early as Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) singled and Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) was hit by a pitch to open the game. An Alexis Buchanan (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position, but the Bears couldn't push anyone across.

Bears starter Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) retired nine of the first 10 batters she saw and both teams remained in a scoreless deadlock through three innings.

The navy-and-gray threatened again in the fourth as both Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) both singled to start off the frame and after Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) belted the third straight hit, Hartwig was cut down at the plate denying the game's first run and the Bears stranded two on.

Farmingdale responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added another four in the fifth to close out the game.

For the Bears

  • Logreco batted 2-for-2 at the plate with a double.
  • Hartwig and Poppett both went 1-for-2 and Gomez finished 1-for-3.
  • Mecham struck out one and took the loss falling to 6-4.
  • Sierra Bedrin (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) tossed 1.1 in relief, four runs (none earned) on two hits with one strikeout.
