Women's Basketball Rallies From 12 Down Against Yeshiva to Earn Second Win of Season

­­­BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to help the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) erase a 33-26 halftime deficit in taking a 76-61 triumph over former HVIAC rivals Yeshiva University in their first Skyline Conference meeting on Monday.

Turning Point

  • The Lady Bears trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter, but outscored the Maccabees 26-17 in the period  to take the lead for good. A 9-0 fourth quarter run helped build a double-digit cushion and the visitors didn't threaten again.

How it Happened

  • The Lady Bears built a 7-2 lead on a Victoria Porcasi triple, but Yeshiva came back and scored the final five points of the period to lead 17-12 at the first break and opened the second stanza with seven more unanswered to build a 12-point lead at the 8:05 mark.
  • A Marino layup ended a nearly five-minute scoring drought for the Lady Bears and trifectas from Kristin Ferrigno and Porcasi brought SJC within four before Yeshiva pushed their advantage to 33-26 at the halftime intermission.
  • A wild third quarter that saw 21 combined fouls and 30 free throw attempts brought SJC back into the game. The Maccabees managed just 39 percent (7-18) from the line while the Lady Bears sank 92 percent (11-12) and SJC reversed a nine-point deficit into a 52-50 lead heading into the final period, with Marino scoring 12 points in the frame and six in the final two minutes to lead the surge.
  • The Macs didn't back down and remained within reach before the Lady Bears scored nine unanswered to move ahead double-digits and controlled the rest of the way.

For the Lady Bears

  • Destiny Marino crossed the 20-point barrier for the fifth time this season and grabbed seven boards and swiped five steals. The sophomore also shot 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
  • Victoria Porcasi tallied 17 points, on 6-of-12 shooting along with four trifectas and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Samantha Simon netted a season-high 14 points.
  • Brittany Cervino chipped in nine points, three assists and two rebounds.
  • Kristen Candelaria added four points, but helped out on the defensive end with 12 rebounds (nine defensive) and swiped a career-high seven steals.

For the Maccabees

  • Michal Alge recorded a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double to pace a balanced offense with four in double-figures.
  • Tess Blaustein came off the bench to score 12 points with eight caroms.
  • Simee Rosner tacked on 11 points falling one rebound shy of a double-double.

Inside the Box Score

  • St. Joseph's managed to overcome a 30 percent shooting effort (21-70), while the Macs shot 41 percent (24-58) and maintained a 54-43 rebounding edge. 
  • Despite the rebounding discrepancy, SJC outscored Yeshiva 25-16 in second chance scoring.
  • SJC also swiped 18 steals and forced 33 Yeshiva turnovers, which they converted into a 31-16 edge in points off turnovers.
  • The Lady Bears continued their strong shooting from the charity stripe connecting on 73 percent (24-33), while the Maccabees were plagued by just a 39 percent (10-26) connect rate from the line.
  • The Maccabees held the lead for over 22 minutes of the contest and led by as many as 12, two minutes into the second stanza.

The Bear Facts

  • St. Joseph's moves to 29-1 in the all-time series winning the 19th straight meeting with the Maccabees. The only SJC loss came in 2001.
