Trio of Double-Doubles Leads Women’s Basketball Past Farmingdale State in Skyline Opener

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play with a road victory against Farmingdale State College, 78-62, on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman center Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) blocked eight shots, typing the record for blocks in a single game while she, Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) all had double-doubles.

How it Happened

The Bears (2-3, 1-0 Skyline) took an early 6-2 lead before the Rams (2-3, 0-1 Skyline) managed to tie the game at 10-all with 4:11 remaining in the opening period. Kiley's made two-pointer briefly gave the Bears the lead before FSC tied the game once more from the free-throw line. The lead would once again swing in the Bears' favor on an O'Donnell three-pointer before Farmingdale State tied the game at 18-all to end the first quarter of play.

The game would continue to be closely contested as the lead exchanged hands in the second period. O'Donnell broke the deadlock that started the quarter before the Rams tied it up minutes later. The final 6:22 of the period saw four ties and as many lead changes with the game knotted up at 34 heading into the half. Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) led the team with six points while Sequeira and Lauren Duggan (Breezy Point, N.Y./St. Saviour) each scored three.

Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) got the second half started with three of the first seven points for the Bears. The lead was pushed to 10 following a Rams timeout. With St. Joseph's holding on to the 45-35 lead, the tempo began to favor the home team as they trimmed their deficit to three. Farmingdale State took the lead at the 2:41 mark in the quarter, extending their advantage to 51-47. Following a layup by Kiley and O'Donnell's three points, the Bears headed into the fourth quarter with a slim one-point lead, 52-51.

Following a two-point bucket by Sequeira, the Rams tied the game again to start the final period. FSC led by as many as four before the Bears went on a three-minute scoring run, in which they scored 10-straight points, six points by O'Donnell to lead 70-58; distancing themselves from the Rams for good. Baskets from O'Donnell, Kiley and Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) sealed the 78-62 win to begin conference play on the right foot.

For the Bears

  • To go along with her eight blocks, Kiley 20 points and 14 rebounds were good for her third double-double of the season.
  • Sequeira is the first Bear since O'Donnell in December 2018 to record double-digit assists in a single game.
  • Sequeira's 12 points and 10 assists are new career-highs in both categories. This was also her first collegiate double-double.
  • O'Donnell registered her second double-double in as many games, scoring 25 and collecting 11 boards.
  • Quesada also reached double-digit rebounds with 10.
