Women’s Basketball Bounces Back to Race Past Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Behind a combined 59 points from Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Lauren Duggan (Breezy Point, N.Y./St. Saviour), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team (8-6, 6-3 Skyline) defeated Sarah Lawrence College (0-14, 0-9 Skyline), 76-36, on Thursday night.

How it Happened

O'Donnell's 17 first-quarter points led the way for the Bears with Kiley and Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) scoring two apiece in the frame. O'Donnell and Sequeira provided the scoring in a 10-0 run to close the quarter. The Bears led 21-4 heading into the second quarter.

Kiley dropped eight points in the second, bringing her game total to 10 in the first half. The Bears saw production from the bench in the period, led by Duggan's seven points. Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) and Kaitlyn Stenz (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) combined for seven points to see the Bears enter halftime with the 43-12 advantage.

O'Donnell drained a pair of three-pointers and a pair of free throws in the third period to cap off her night with 25 points in the game. Kiley's seven in the quarter propelled the Bears to their largest lead of the game at 61-16 with 3:02 on the clock. The Bears entered the final stanza with a 63-21 lead despite the Gryphons scored five of the final seven points in the period.

While Sarah Lawrence outscored the Bears 15-13 in the fourth quarter, Duggan posted a team-leading eight points for SJC. The remaining five points came courtesy of a Lisa LoSchiavo (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) trey and a Kiley layup. The Bears closed the game with the 40-point victory, 76-36.

For the Bears

  • All 11 Bears who suited up saw playing time with eight players finding the scoresheet.
  • O'Donnell's 25-point game was the seventh game in which she scored 20-plus points. She also collected seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
  • Kiley drained 19 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked six shots.
  • Duggan scored a career-high 15 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, to go along with three boards.
  • Sequeira matched a career-high four steals while providing five assists, three rebounds, and two points.
