Women’s Basketball Avoids Defeat Against Farmingdale State

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — For the second time in three games, double-doubles from the trident of Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), and Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) led the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team to a 70-61 victory over Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears (12-9, 10-6 Skyline) started the game on a 16-3 run, aided by Kiley's six points and five by O'Donnell and Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison). The Rams (8-12, 6-10 Skyline) found the hole before Kiley capped off her 10-point first quarter with four points; giving the Bears a commanding 20-5 lead into the second quarter.

The second stanza began with FSC narrowing their gap to nine. Despite the Bears' offensive struggles in the period, their lead grew to 17; fueled by Samantha Wilber's (Island Heights, N.J./Central Regional) five points off the bench and the team shooting 7-of-12 from the charity stripe. Farmingdale State scored the final six points of the half but SJC took a 33-22 lead into the intermission.

Kiley's seven and Quesada's five in the third quarter contributed to St. Joseph's holding on to their double-figure advantage throughout the period, leading by as many as 16. The Rams managed to chip away at their deficit, trailing by 11 (49-38) entering the fourth quarter.

The visitors mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, ultimately coming to within a three-pointer of tying with 3:16 left on a layup by Mackenzie Tierney. After Tierney missed the ensuing free throw, O'Donnell went coast to coast and scored a layup and a free throw of her own; giving the navy and gray some breathing room down the stretch. With 12 points from O'Donnell in the quarter, the Bears held on for a nine-point win, 70-61.
