Women’s Soccer Battles Mount St. Vincent in First Round of Skyline Playoffs

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — In their first-ever playoff game as a member of the Skyline Conference, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team faced the College of Mount St. Vincent on Saturday morning. The Dolphins offense was in full force as they ran away with an 8-0 victory to advance to the semifinals.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Mount St. Vincent 8, St. Joseph's 0
  • Records: Mount St. Vincent (9-7), St. Joseph's (8-8)
  • Location: Riverdale, N.Y. — Marillac Field

How It Happened

  • As soon as the fifth minute, Julia McGowan tapped a slow rolling shot that was mishandled by the Bears' goalie and quickly put the hosts up 1-0. SJC's defense held the Dolphins scoreless for the next 28 minutes, then Nicole Weber nailed a 25-yard goal into the upper righthand corner to extend the lead to two.
  • With the first half ticking down, a Bears' foul inside their own box led to a Mount St. Vincent penalty kick. Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) laid out for the save, but Kellie Gibison was there for the rebound as her tap-in gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead at intermission.
  • Right off the bat in the second Erin Dailey clanged a 20-yard shot off the left post that ricocheted into the back of the net to add to the scoring. McGowan would pick up her second netter of the day 20 minutes later on a bending long-range kick to push the CMSV tally to 6-0. The Dolphins would pour on three additional scores in an 11-minute span, securing them a trip to the second round.
