Women’s Soccer Falters to CCNY in Home Opener

NEW YORK — Sophomore Rebecca De Rosa (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) netted the first goal of the season for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team, but the Bears (0-2) dropped a 4-1 non-conference decision to City College of New York (3-0) on Wednesday evening at Randall's Island.

How it Happened

An own goal gave the visitors an early lead in the 18th minute when the Bears defense clearing attempt after a corner kick ricocheted off their a Bear and back into the net. CCNY jumped ahead 2-0 less than 10 minutes later when Diana Grisales-Agudelo set up Gabrielle Duchaussee with a 1v1 attempt that she slotted into the back of the net.

The Bears got on the board in the 34th minute, when Rebecca De Rosa struck from distance, taking a pass from Anisah Molic outside the top of the box and fired high over the goalie and just under the crossbar, sending SJC into the intermission with a 2-1 deficit,

Early in the second stanza, Deserae Sequeira nearly leveled the game with a direct kick that rang squarely off the frame. SJC had several scoring opportunities over the final 45 and outshot CCNY in the period, 8-6, but the Beavers matched added an insurance goal in the 50th minute and tacked on a late goal.

For the Bears

  • De Rosa's goal was the third of her short two-year career.
  • Sequeira finished with seven of the Bears' 11 shots with four coming on goal.
  • Freshman Julia Lavelle fired a pair of shots (one on goal).

Next Up

The Bears will return to their other home field, Aviator Field, but wearing their road kits for a non-conference matchup against Medgar Evers College on Saturday, September 8 kicking off 5:30 p.m. Video will be available on SJCBears.com.
