Sequeira’s Brace Lifts Women’s Soccer to Huge Skyline Victory Over Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Sophomore Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) scored twice in the first half as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team never trailed in a 3-1 Skyline Conference road win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park.

The victory—the first over the Dolphins in four meetings all-time—boosted the Bears to third place in the league standings and lifted their overall record back to .500 (7-7, 4-3 Skyline).

How It Happened

Sequeira needed just 2:36 to break open the scoring taking a feed from Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) to score on the game's first shot. Madison Shultz got the Dolphins (4-6-1, 3-2) back to level at 1-1 with a goal in the 20th minute.

The rematch of last year's Skyline first round matchup saw both teams evenly matched and scoring opportunities scarce, but Sequeira capitalized on the Bears only other attempt in the half in the 42nd minute chipping a ball over the keeper from the top of the box while being heavily defended.

The Dolphins upped the pressure in the second stanza looking for the equalizer and fired three shots in the first 17 minutes—matching their first-half total—but Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) was up to the test stopping all three. The Bears countered in the 64th minute when Lavelle made a 35-yard run speeding past three Dolphin defenders and slotted one into the cage for an insurance goal.

Mount Saint Vincent tried to cut into the Bears advantage firing off six more shots—finishing with a 9-2 shot edge in the half—but Shaban finished with five saves in the half to help preserve the win.

For the Bears

• Sequeira scored her league-leading 13th goal of the season. With her third multi-goal game of the season, she also moves into second all-time in program history for goals scored (36) surpassing Shannon Fahy '15.
• Lavelle accumulated three points with her ninth goal of the season (T-4th in Skyline) and her second assist.
• Shaban finished with seven saves to collect her seventh win of the season in goal.
• The Bears scored three goals on four shots, Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) firing the other SJC shot.
