WASHINGTON D.C. - Junior forward Deserae Sequeira's (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) record-tying four-goal performance lifted the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team to a 6-3 win at Gallaudet University on Sunday afternoon to kick off the 2019 season. This marked the Bears' first season-opening win since 2014. 

How it Happened

The Bears opened the scoring five minutes into the match when a throw-in by Lisa LoSchiavo (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) led to Sequeira heading the ball into the goal. The Bears took a 2-0 lead when Sequiera added to the tally in the 25th minute on a pass that was perfectly placed by Christina DiBartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills).

Ten minutes into the second half, the Bears increased their lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy). The 62nd minute of play saw the start of a seven-minute goal-fest when Gallaudet's Payton DeGraw scored to put the Bison on the board. Sequeira gave the Bears a 4-1 lead when she secured a hat-trick in the 64th minute; coming to within a goal of the all-time goal-scoring record at St. Joseph's. DeGraw's second goal of the game came in the 68th minute to cut the deficit back to within two (4-2). A minute later, Sequiera tied the goal-scoring record when a Gallaudet defensive error allowed her to score in front of an open goal, bringing the Bears' lead back to three (5-2).

The Bison scored once more in the 79th minute on a loose ball in the 18-yard box. Freshman Clara Curtiss (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 85th minute to seal the 6-3 victory for the Bears.

  • Sequeira's four goals brought her up to 43 career goals to tie her with Cansu Usta for the most goals all-time in program history.

  • Sequeira took 14 shots on the afternoon with nine on the face of goal.

  • Goalkeeper Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) faced 11 shots in the game, coming up with eight saves in the win.

  • DiBartolo led the team with two assists.

  • This was the Bears' third season-opening win in program history and first since defeating Medgar Evers College in 2014.
