Women’s Soccer Flies Past Yeshiva in Skyline Opener Behind Trio of Hat Tricks Play Video

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (5-1, 1-0 Skyline) matched their best start in program history downing Yeshiva University (0-5, 0-3 Skyline) in a lopsided, 14-0, victory at Aviator Field on Sunday as the Bears won their Skyline Conference opener for the second-straight season.

Seven different Bears scored in the win while junior Rachel Rocha (Linden, N.J./Linden) and rookie Haley Fahrmann (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) recorded the first hat tricks of their careers and freshman Kaitlyn Starks (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona College Prep Erie) notched her first collegiate goal.

How It Happened
Fahrmann opened the scoring in the fourth minute as she received a corner kick from junior Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) and finished with her left foot past the keeper into the left upper 90 to begin the Bears' high-scoring attack. Fahrmann was back at it seven minutes later after a Lisa LoSchiavo (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) throw-in was tapped by Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) who found the Minnesota native in the box for her second score.

Sequeira, the team's scoring leader, made her way into the goal column with two tallies in under a minute followed by a penalty kick goal off the foot of Rocha (15'). Then, holding a 5-0 cushion, Sequeira put away another unassisted goal on a snipe from 30 yards out (24') securing an early hat trick while Fahrmann earned her hat trick on assists from both Sequeira and Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) just four minutes later.

LoSchiavo, Molic, and rookie Clara Curtiss (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) all joined the scoring spree before halftime as SJC carried a 10-0 bump at the break. The Bears limited Yeshiva to seven shots on the game (just one in the first) and the second half saw Curtiss earn a brace, Rocha nab two late goals for her three-piece, and Starks find the back of the net in the 64th minute as St. Joseph's rolled to a 1-0 Skyline start.

For the Bears

  • Sequeira, Rocha, Lavelle, and Molic all had two assists in the victory.
  • The Bears attempted 41 shots on the day led by Rocha (7), Molic (6), Sequeira (5), and LoSchiavo (5).
  • Rookies Fahrmann, Curtiss, and Starks all attempted four shots apiece as 60% of head coach Gary Lawson's 2019 recruiting class scored in the win.
  • Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) split the shutout in net with Shaban saving the only two Yeshiva shots on goal of the game.
