Women’s Soccer Halted by Rutgers-Newark in Final Non-Conference Tilt

NEWARK, N.J. — In their final non-league game of 2019, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (6-3) fell to Rutgers University-Newark (6-4) on the road on Wednesday, 12-1. Junior Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson), who currently ranks second in Division III with 14 goals, scored on a second-half penalty kick for the Bears' lone tally.

How It Happened
The Scarlet Knights opened the scoring just 1:16 into the match as Ana Silveira drilled a header over the keeper off a cross from Maria Miranda. Jessica Moreno then scored an unassisted tally from long-range just nine minutes later for a quick 2-0 bump. Rutgers-Newark added three more to the scoreboard before the half outshooting SJC 19-1 for a commanding 5-0 advantage.

Five minutes into the second half, the Scarlet Knights committed a foul in the box leading to Sequeira's PK opportunity which she converted to get St. Joseph's on the board. However, the Bears only attempted one more shot over the rest of the contest and the hosts saw seven second-half goals as SJC dropped their final tune-up before the heart of the Skyline schedule.

• Sequeira attempted a team-high two shots to pace a stymied Bears' offense.
• Freshman Haley Fahrmann (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) fired SJC's only other shot on the night.
• Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) and Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) combined for 12 saves in the loss.
