Lavelle Scores Women’s Soccer’s Lone Goal in Loss to SJC Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (6-7, 1-3) battled sibling rival SJC Long Island (7-5-1, 5-1) in Patchogue on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final score of 5-1 for the Bears' sixth-straight defeat.

Sophomore forward Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) netted her sixth goal of the season to get the Bears on the board in the first half.

How It Happened
The Golden Eagles were the more aggressive team right out of the gates and it showed in the first half shot totals as they attempted 17 compared to the visitors' six. The third of those shots ended up as a goal for Christina Gagliardi in just the tenth minute for a quick 1-0 edge.

SJCLI's Abbey Curcio doubled her team's lead just nine minutes later with an unassisted tally to take control early on. Curcio then assisted on a pair of scores in the 25th minute, one from Karissa Rutigliano as well as Gagliardi's second, to again double the Golden Eagles' lead (4-0).

Lavelle found the back of the net shortly after on her first shot attempt of the contest which cut Brooklyn's deficit to three (28'). However, the hosts carried the 4-1 advantage into the half and didn't slow down after the break.

Long Island added an insurance goal in the 65th minute off the foot of Jaclyn O'Shaughnessy making it 5-1 with 25 minutes to play. The Golden Eagles' defense was even more stout in the second, holding the Bears to just one shot in the final 45, as they cruised to a lopsided Skyline Conference victory.

For the Bears

  • Lavelle tied with junior Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) for the team lead in shots (two) as the Bears offense was stymied on the road.
  • Sophomore keeper Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) came away with 13 saves in the loss.
