Castaneda’s Flurry of Goals Fuels Women’s Soccer Past Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. — Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) netted six goals while Christina Di Bartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills) dished out a quartet of assists as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (1-0-1) came away with an emphatic 14-0 victory over the University of Valley Forge (0-2) on Tuesday afternoon. The two came within a goal and an assist of matching the program single-game records in their respective categories.

The victory was the first for the Bears under Coach Kelly Raddar and his first NCAA head coaching win.

How it Happened

The navy and gray took an early lead five minutes into the match; when Di Bartolo's delivery from the corner was headed by Kaitlyn Starks (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona College Prep Erie) past the Valley Forge keeper. Castaneda added a pair of goals within seven minutes to extend the advantage to 3-0.

A pair of goals came in rapid succession in the 28th minute; first, Di Bartolo fed Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) – standing unopposed in the box – for the game's fourth goal followed by a Castaneda header – shortly after the restart – to take an irreversible 5-0 lead. Ashley Vozella (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) opened her account in the 36th minute courtesy of another DiBartolo set-piece before Castaneda added her fourth goal of the half prior to the intermission.

The second half was highlighted by a 10 minute period, between the 66th and 76th minutes, where the Bears scored five goals – with Castaneda tallying a pair – to add to an already lopsided result. A testament to a strong defensive performance, Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) stopped Valley Forge's lone shot of the game in the 84th minute before DiBartolo completed her brace in the final minute of the match.

For the Bears

  • SJC outshot the Patriots 41-1 with 21 on target.
  • Eight different Bears took shots as Castaneda led the way with 10 followed by Di Bartolo with seven and Vozella and Heather Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) taking six each.
  • Di Bartolo, Starks, and Lavelle all scored a pair on the afternoon.
  • Vozella and Bollmann both scored their first collegiate goals.
  • Shaban logged her third-career shutout.
