Women’s Volleyball Dominates York College For Second Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (4-6, 0-1 Skyline) hit a season-high .339 and landed a season-high-tying 24 aces to defeat York College (0-11) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-6, 25-3, 25-7) in a non-conference tilt on Monday evening at The Hill Center.

Junior Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) paced the offense with nine kills and seven aces, while freshman Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) directed the offense with 22 assists and nine aces.

 

How it Happened

Freshman Kayla Ostermann (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) slammed five kills in the opening set as SJC broke the set open with a 12-0 run and cruised to a 25-6 set win.

The offense kept rolling in the second stanza combining for 10 kills against one error, with Urgo leading the attack with five kills on six swings and also served up five aces for the 25-3 set win.

The Bears opened the third set with eight straight points and never turned back.

For the Bears

  • Urgo finished with a match-high nine kills, paired with seven aces and six digs.
  • Beehler had her third 20+ assist game of the season (seventh double-digit assist game) and matched her season high with nine aces.
  • Ostermann slammed a season-high eight kills.
  • Cristina Morales chipped in five kills at a .714 clip and brought up five digs.
