Marrazzo’s 13 Kills Lead Women’s Volleyball to Sweep of Centenary

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After losing three of their previous four matches, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team hosted Centenary University on Tuesday night and won in straight sets. Junior Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) led the Bears with a season-high tying 13 kills (16 points) as they earned their seventh win of 2018.

How It Happened
Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) opened the match with four-straight aces as the Bears took control early. A Melissa Kreuger ace brought the Cyclones within three (15-12), but SJC reeled off nine-straight points, including three Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) aces, to put the set away.

Marrazzo picked up three kills at the beginning of the second propelling the Bears to a 7-1 lead. Soon after, St. Joseph's went on a 9-1 run that saw four aces and essentially put the frame away.

The third stanza was more closely contested as an SJC error tied the score at nine. Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) rattled off three aces in a row as part of a 14-2 Bears' spurt that secured a 23-11 advantage. Beehler, the team's setter, finished things off with a kill of her own as the Bears completed their fourth sweep of the season.

For the Bears

  • Marrazzo (13 kills, two aces, one block) and Urgo (eight kills, seven aces) combined for 31 points to spearhead the offense.
  • Beehler dished out 24 assists as well as eight aces and three kills and Morales chipped in six kills, six aces, and seven digs.
