Women’s Volleyball Captures Second-Straight Sweep Topping CCNY

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and junior Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) combined for 23 kills as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team raced past the City College of New York in straight sets on Tuesday night at The Hill Center. With the victory, the Bears are now winners of four of their last five and are now one game under .500 on the season (9-10).

How It Happened
The match was a back-and-forth affair early on as a Nicole Polanco kill had the Beavers trailing by just one (9-8). The Bears picked up steam immediately reeling off an 11-2 run to establish a double-digit advantage (20-10). SJC capped off the set with four unanswered points, including two kills from Morales, for a 25-13 victory.

A St. Joseph's error kept the Beavers in it trailing 9-7 at the start of the second, but four-straight scores extended SJC's lead to six. Nicole Leone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) notched two aces as part of a 6-0 spurt in the middle of the set giving the Bears another 20-10 lead that they wouldn't relinquish, winning the frame 25-12.

The third stanza was all SJC as Morales slammed a kill off of a pass from Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) to put them up 10-3. Soon after, both teams exchanged 4-0 runs, but the Bears maintained an 18-9 advantage. St. Joseph's held on despite a late 6-3 spurt from CCNY as Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) hit the final kill of the match for a 25-16 triumph and the sweep.

  • Morales finished with 13 kills and eight digs while Marrazzo added 10 kills, five digs, and three total blocks.
  • Beehler secured a double-double dishing out 28 assists and bringing up 11 digs.
  • Urgo added eight digs of her own as well as five kills and two aces.
