Women’s Volleyball Drops Season Opener Against William Paterson

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to William Paterson University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-16), at The Hill Center on Saturday afternoon to begin the 2019 season.

How it Happened

The first nine points of the opening set saw four ties and two lead changes, with the Bears taking the advantage on two occasions. The Pioneers took the lead, with the score at 5-4, and never trailed from that point. They would take a 12-5 lead as a result of errors on the part of St. Joseph's. Following a timeout called by head coach Kathleen O'Neill, the Bears used a 9-3 scoring run, with the help of three kills and a service ace by Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep), to cut the deficit to four points; trailing 16-12. William Paterson distanced themselves to win the set by six points, 25-19.

The visitors took full control in the second set. A pair of 9-0 runs in the middle and end of the set, propelled the Pioneers to the 25-10 win.

St. Joseph's only lead in the third set was shortlived when, following an opening service ace by Urgo, the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) led the Bears with four kills in the set to go along with three by Urgo. However, it wasn't enough as William Paterson took the set 26-15 to win the game in straight sets.

For the Bears

  • Of the 26 kills for the home team, Urgo, Morales and Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) each recorded seven kills for a combined 21.

  • Morales led the Bears with 17 digs on the afternoon

  • Newcomer Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) led the team with 22 assists.
