Women’s Volleyball Falters on the Road to Saint Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — In their first road game of the 2019 season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (0-2) fell in straight sets to the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday night. Despite the loss, sophomore Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) recorded five kills and eight digs to lead the Bears' attack.

How It Happened
St. Joseph's established a slim three-point lead early in the first after a service ace from rookie Caitlyn Bibao (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) made the score 7-4. The Bears' edge was then cut to one (10-9) before the Eagles rattled off a 9-1 run for a commanding 18-11 lead. Then, despite six unanswered SJC points capped off by back-to-back Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) aces, CSE held on for a 25-19 set victory.

SJC found once again found themselves in a close contest early in the second trailing 13-10, but a 7-2 spurt from the hosts put the Bears down 19-12. The Bears continued to fight as they did in set one, scraping together another five unanswered to come within two (19-17) after a Morales kill. However, the Eagles rallied late for the second-straight frame and came away with another 25-19 triumph.

A multitude of CSE miscues kept the Bears within striking distance in the third as they trailed 10-8 to get things started. Soon after, freshman Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tied the score at 14 with her first-career service ace. The Bears then went on to take a 16-15 lead on another Eagle error, but Saint Elizabeth cruised to the sweep with an 8-3 rally to close out the set and the match.

For the Bears

  • Marrazzo finished with 10 digs and three aces while freshman Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) brought up a team-high 11 digs in defeat.
  • Intindola dished out a team-high eight assists and added five digs on the defensive end.
  • Saint Elizabeth committed 23 errors on the night, compared to the Bears' 17, but SJC had 47 digs as a team and CSE brought up 42.
