Women's Volleyball Falls in Five at Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team raced out to a two-set lead, but fell on the road to Brooklyn College in five sets, 22-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 15-9, on Thursday evening. The Bears (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season while the Bulldogs (5-1) extended their win streak to five.

Sophomore Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) led the Bears attack with 11 kills at a .219 clip and added 16 digs for a double-double. Freshman Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) had a double-double by way of 10 kills and 13 digs.

How it Happened

The Bears took the opening set breaking away with a 9-0 run powered by a trio of kills and a block assist by Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) to take a 17-8 lead. The Bulldogs drew even at 18-all but SJC closed out the set winning four of the final six points, a Morales ace sealing the 25-22 win.

The navy and gray took another close second stanza after falling behind early, 8-1, and late in the frame, 23-21, but rattled off four straight points with kills by Adeoye and Urgo to move ahead 2-0 in sets.

The Bulldogs attack came alive in sets three and four to force a fifth set. BC hit .257 and combined for 27 kills over the two frames, while the Bears landed just 13 kills at a .015 rate.

In the fifth-and-deciding set, kills from Kane and Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) followed by an Urgo ace gave SJC a slight 6-3 lead. BC called a timeout, and came out with a 4-1 run to tie the frame at 7-7, prompting an SJC timeout. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 9-7 before a Julie Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) kill knotted the frame at 9-9, but BC won the next six points to close out the match.
