John Jay Bests Women's Volleyball in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In their first home contest of the season, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to John Jay College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-23) on Wednesday night.

How it Happened

Despite the Bloodhounds (3-0) holding the lead throughout the opening set, the Bears (1-1) remained in touching distance, trailing by no more than seven in the frame. A 20-13 deficit was cut to four behind Kaitlyn Intindola's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) kill and service ace. A pair of aces from Rosa Rosas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) brought the SJBK deficit to one, 22-21 but John Jay picked up the final three points of the set.

Down 7-1 to start the second stanza, kills from Intindola and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) and a string of errors on the Bloodhounds' attack saw the Bears reduce the deficit to 11-8, forcing the visitors to call a timeout. Momentum was back on John Jay's side following the timeout as a 7-0 run towards the end of the set propelled them to a 25-13 set win.

Kills from Hoxha and Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) brought a 3-0 deficit to a 4-4 tie to start the third. The Bloodhounds picked up three-straight points before the navy and gray again equalized, this time 7-7. Much like the first set, the Bears were never too far behind, mounting a comeback from down six – at 16-10 – to one, 18-17, courtesy of kills from McGinty and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission HIlls). With John Jay at match point, the Bears picked up three points to come within a point of tying but a kill by the visitors halted any hope to extend the match, clinching the set 25-23.

For the Bears

  • McGinty and Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) shared the team lead with five kills each.

  • Urgo brought up 14 digs, also a team-high, followed by Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) with 13.

  • Intindola dished out nine assists to go with seven digs and a pair of kills.

  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) logged five assists and three digs.

  • Hoxha finished with three kills.

  • Of the Bears' six service aces, Rosas' two in the opening set led the squad.
