Women’s Volleyball Cruises to Straight-Set Triumph At York
JAMAICA, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team snapped a five-match skid defeating York College, 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-11) in non-conference action on Thursday evening.
Sophomore Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) led all attackers for the second-straight evening with nine kills and freshman Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) distributed 22 assists and directed the team to a season-high .219 hitting.
How it Happened
The squads traded the lead through the first eight points of the match before the Bears pulled away with an 11-1 run for a 14-5 lead and never turned back.
SJBK built a 19-9 lead in the second stanza before the hosts surged late and pulled within three at 23-20, but the Bears took the final two points in the closest set of the contest.
The Bears' offense found their groove in the third and put away 13 kills at a blistering .364 to close out the match.
For the Bears
Urgo paired her match-high nine kills with four aces and five digs.
Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) landed five kills each.
In addition to directing the offense, Meltsin also led the defense with nine digs, falling one shy of a double-double.
