Women’s Volleyball Defeated by William Paterson and Baruch in Tri-Match

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-set defeats on Saturday afternoon at the Baruch College tri-match. The Bears (2-7) fell to William Paterson University 25-5, 25-21, 25-18 in game one. The back end of the tri-match went the way of the host Bearcats 25-18, 25-16, 25-16.

How it Happened vs. William Paterson

After dropping the tri-match opener to Baruch in five sets, the Pioneers opened the contest on a 12-1 run. It was interrupted by an Aymoide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) kill and service ace. Another William Paterson scoring run, this time 13-2, closed out the frame.

The Bears took their first lead of the match at 2-1 in the second set. The Pioneers regained the advantage and were able to retake the advantage when Jillian McGinty's (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) block tied the set at nine-all. With WPU leading 15-12, offensive miscues led to a 16-16 tie and the Bears going ahead on a McGinty ace. However, the Pioneers were able to turn things around to win the set, 25-21.

William Paterson raced out to a 6-1 start in the third stanza before St. Joseph's came to within one, 8-7. Their lead grew to as many as nine. Kills from Adeoye, Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney), and Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) chipped at the Pioneers' lead but it wasn't enough as the Bears dropped the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

How it Happened vs. Baruch

The Bears grabbed a 9-8 lead early on with kills from Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) but the advantage swung back in the Bearcats' favor. SJBK managed to tie things at 18-all however, Baruch's seven unanswered points resulted in their set win, 25-18.

The hosts led from start to finish in the second set, 25-16. Poppett notched three kills in the frame.

The Bears took their largest lead of the match to begin the third frame, 6-0. Baruch used a 9-0 run of their own to take the lead. The navy and gray replied with six of the next seven points going their way, 12-10. Baruch sealed the match with a 14-4 run to win the set 25-16.

For the Bears vs. William Paterson

  • Adeoye led the team with five kills

  • Urgo and Intindola each had four kills and five digs with the latter dishing out nine assists.

  • McGinty and Julie Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) brought up four digs.

  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) had four assists while Melo had three.

For the Bears vs. Baruch

  • Poppett finished with five kills, a pair of digs, and a block.

  • Urgo and McGinty each had three kills and an ace. Urgo brought up five digs while McGinty had two.

  • Melo had 10 digs, one shy of the match-high. She also logged a pair of kills.

  • Meltsin came up with nine digs and handed out six assists.

  • Adeoye served up a pair of aces.
