Ten Bears Score in Victory Over CCNY

BROOKLYN, NY – St. Joseph's evened their record at 8-8 Saturday afternoon with a 74-61 win over CCNY. The Bears have won three games in a row at Brooklyn Technical High School and four of their last five overall.

St. Joseph's was led by the trio of Ismael Dabo (Long Island City, NY/St. John's Prep), Antoine Forehand (New York, NY/Rice) and Justin Gist (Brooklyn, NY/Newsome) who all scored 13 points. The 13 points was a season high for Dabo, who also pulled down five rebounds.

The efficient Bears shot 47.5% from the floor, including 55.2% in the first half. St. Joseph's took the lead on the opening possession on a layup from Dabo and never looked back.

The Bears pushed the lead to ten at 20-10 with just under 13 minutes left to play, but the Beavers fought their way back with a 13-4 run, getting to within one point of the Bears' lead. St. Joseph's answered with a three from David Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/Christ the King) giving themselves some cushion.

CCNY committed 11 turnovers in the final 8:39 while scoring only five points and the opportunistic Bears took advantage scoring 13 points and taking a 40-28 lead into the half. Gist scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half on 4-of-5 shooting and went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.

St. Joseph's maintained a double-digit lead for the entire second half, not allowing the Beavers a chance to come back. A jumper by Forehand at the 7:21 mark gave the Bears a 20-point lead, their largest of the afternoon.

The Beavers outscored the Bears 19-12 down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to put the Bears lead in any danger as St. Joseph's cruised to a 74-61 victory.

CCNY held a slight 46-to-44 rebounding edge for the game with 11 coming from Terrence Johnston. Hector Hernandez scored 16 points for the Beavers to lead all scorers and Israel Vickers added 15 points.

The Bears remain at home for their second straight matinee honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday against CUNY-foe, Hunter. The day-game is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
