Men's Soccer Holds On To Complete Sweep of York

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In a wild game that saw four goals scored in a span of six minutes, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team held on to defeat York College (N.Y.), 3-2, on Thursday night at Aviator Sports and Events Center.

The Bears (2-3) completed a sweep of the Cardinals (3-5) following the women's 4-0 victory preceding the game. The win snapped a three-game skid and leveled the all-time series with York at 1-1 – St. Joseph's suffering an 8-0 defeat in last year's meeting.

Junior Thomas Homier (Middletown, Del./Middletown) found the back of the net in the 30th minute, scoring the lone goal of the opening 45, dribbling through the defense and around the goalie for his team-leading third tally of the season. Senior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) nearly put the Bears up 2-0 five minutes later, firing a shot that hit the crossbar.

The second stanza started off slow until a wild sequence of events starting in the 63th minute with rookie Beka Goduadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/Lyceum "NK") converting a penalty kick for his second collegiate goal. Three minutes later, junior Benny Barrios (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) launched a direct kick from distance that was dropped by the keeper but found it's way into the goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

But that cushion shrunk quickly as York scored their first goal on the ensuing possession, Wilkerson Jean Jacques shooting a low shot from the edge of the 18. Just one minute later, York made the most of a penalty kick opportunity of their own, Jordan Chin's successful attempt cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Down the stretch, the Bears defense would withstand two corners and two shots from the Cardinals, but held on for the victory.

The Cardinals held a 14-11 advantage in shots and 7-3 edge in corners.

Senior Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) finished with four saves, three in the second half, to earn the victory in net.

St. Joseph's will resume Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Sunday, September 28th hosting defending champion Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
