Men's Soccer Stumbles at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (2-5-1, 0-3-1 Skyline) fell 7-0 to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (8-5-1, 5-1-0 Skyline) on Wednesday night from Bartoszeck Field.

How it Happened

Scoring opportunities were had for both sides throughout the first 15 minutes. In the 16th, Abram Ehrhorn tapped in the Mariners' first goal courtesy of a corner kick. A Maximilian Farris goal in the 28th minute kick-started a 13-minute period in which the hosts scored four times, taking a 5-0 lead into the intermission.

The Mariners added a pair of goals to their tally within the opening 15 minutes of the second stanza. Despite being in a seven-goal hole, the Bears were able to test the USMMA goalkeeper; with Matthew Kieblesz (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Arturo Franco (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) having their strikes saved. However, the Mariners held on to the 7-0 result and first place in the Skyline Conference.

For the Bears

  • Six players took shots, with Diego Volpe (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) leading the way with two.

  • Three shots were on target: one from Kieblesz, Franco, and YeonJun Jung (Seoul, South Korea/LaSalle Academy).

  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) and Luther Saint-Jean (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Origins) combined to outsave USMMA's keeper, 5-3.
