Trio of Rookies Guide Men's Soccer to Victory Over Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — The freshman trio of Arturo Franco (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland), Matthew Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International), and Matthew Kieblesz (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) scored their first collegiate goals as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team defeated SUNY Maritime College, 3-0, from Reinhart Field.

The win snaps a six-match winless run and is the Bears' first in Skyline Conference play this season. (3-6-1, 1-4-1). It also marks the program's first triumph over the Privateers (5-6-0, 2-5-0 Skyline) in six all-time meetings.

How it Happened

The Bears wouldn't wait long for their first goal of the game as Franco fired a third-minute shot, the first of the match for either side, from 20 yards out to score. The 22nd minute saw the navy and gray add to their lead when Sergio Larios (Woodside, N.Y./William C. Bryant) found Helfant, who scored from the edge of the box. The Bears took the two-goal advantage into the break.

In the 51st, after the Privateers nearly grabbed a goal back to begin the second half, Kieblesz was fed a through-ball from Eric Santiago Torres (Woodside, N.Y./Forest Hills) and beat Maritime's goalkeeper on his left-hand side, and scored in front of an empty goal. The hosts managed to get off 17 shots in the game but the Bears' defense kept the Privateers off the board, preserving their 3-0 win and Alejandro Oliveros' (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) third shutout of the season.

Highlights

For the Bears
