Men’s Soccer Falls to Mount Saint Mary in Season Finale

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team concluded its 2021 campaign on Tuesday night with a defeat to Mount Saint Mary College, 4-0, from Kaplan Field. The Bears finish with a 4-8-3 record (2-6-3 Skyline) while the hosts, who entered the day in fourth place in the conference, capped off their regular season at 9-6-1 (8-2-1 Skyline).

How it Happened

In an evenly played first 45' under torrential rain, both the Bears and Knights came away with five shots each. Menzi Simelane (Johannesburg, South Africa) took a half-leading two shots while he and Matthew Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) registered SJC's two shots on target.

The Knights scored first and it came 46 seconds into the second half. Midfielder Matt Wyant fed Nick Biagini inside the area who slotted the opening goal. Wyant was involved in MSMC's second goal, rocketing a ball to the upper corner in the 69'. The hosts scored a pair more, coming at 86' and 88', to seal their 4-0 win.

For the Bears

  • Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) and Norbu Dittrich (Weinheim, Germany/Werner-Hesenberg Gymnasium) were responsible for the lone shots in the second half.

  • Of the Bears' seven shots, Simelane and Cano led the team with two apiece.

  • In his 66th and final career match, Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) posted eight saves. The shot-stopper finishes his time at SJC Brooklyn with 353 saves, good for second in program history.
