Softball Drops Two at Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team dropped both games of their Skyline Conference doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Saturday, falling 10-2 in game one in five innings and losing 4-0 in an abbreviated second game which was called after five innings due to inclement weather.

Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) was the lone Bear to record a hit in both ends of the twin bill, combining to go 3-for-4.

How it Happened, Game 1

Bears' (9-6, 0-4) starter Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) conceded just a hit in two shutout innings to begin the contest. The navy and gray gave the rookie a two-run edge as Gomez and Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont) scored on Alexis Buchanan's (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) single in the top of the third.

The Valiants (12-12, 7-1) trimmed the SJC lead in half on an RBI single in their half of the stanza before Giovanna Liggett's three-run homer gave the hosts a two-run advantage, 4-2. Manhattanville broke the game open in the fourth, plating six runs en route to a 10-2 victory.

Gomez, Buchanan, and Bella Hurtado (San Diego, Calif./Olimpian) accounted for the Bears' three hits in the game. Poppett (4-2) took her second loss of the campaign.

Game 2

The Valiants jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as pitcher Emily Mottoshiski's two-RBI double at the plate supported her own cause in the circle. A pair of base knocks in the fifth increased the host's lead to 4-0. The inning was largely played in the midst of a downpour in Westchester County, resulting in unplayable field conditions and the game being called.

Gomez notched her fifth multi-hit game of the season thanks to singles in the first and third innings. Vivian Tomovich's (San Diego, Calif./Serra) second-inning double was the lone extra base-hit on the day for SJC. Singles from Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) and Emily Burroughs (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) rounded out the Bears' five hits in the rain-shortened contest.

Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) tossed 4.2 innings as the defeat drops her to 1-3 on the year.
