Women's Basketball's Skid Snapped at Old Westbury
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's basketball team's two-game losing streak came to an end on Monday night thanks to a 67-50 triumph over the SUNY College at Old Westbury. It is the Bears' (2-2, 1-1) first win in Skyline Conference play.
How it Happened
Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) had an efficient first quarter, banking 10 of the team's first 16 points on 4-of-4 from the field including two made three-pointers. Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) and Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) combined for eight points in the period as the navy and gray held a 22-8 lead on the Panthers (0-4, 0-2) going into the seconf quarter.
Grace Kennedy's (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) headlined the second stanza with six points, four rebounds, and two steals coming off the bench. Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) also had four caroms in the quarter as the Bears led by as many as 20 in the period, 40-20. Old Westbury would trim their deficit to 13 thanks to a 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the half, 40-27.
The Bears held on to their double-figure lead in the third with Hurt, Kiley, and Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) combining to shoot 60 percent from the floor. St. Joseph's' lead once again grew to 20 in the fourth before sealing a 17-point triumph, 67-50.
For the Bears
- Kiley had a season-high 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks.
- Breen finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
- Hurt came a point away from a double-double, totaling 10 boards and nine points.
- Donovan also had nine points to go with five caroms and three assists.
- Of Adeoye's 10 rebounds, four came on the offensive glass with the remaining six on the defensive end. She also had five points and two assists.
- Kennedy had eight points and six boards.
