Lady Bears Soccer Fights to Scoreless Draw With Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team remained undefeated in their inaugural season playing to a hard-fought, 0-0 tie with borough rivals Brooklyn College on Thursday evening on the road.

The Lady Bears (1-0-1) dominated over the first 45 minutes keeping the ball in the Brooklyn end for most of the half, creating multiple scoring opportunities which they parlayed into a 9-3 shot advantage, with three shots on goal.

The roles would be reversed in the second half, as Brooklyn (0-2-1) took to the offensive and outshot the Lady Bears, 6-2, with junior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS) preserving the scoreless tie, stopping five shots including a couple breakaway opportunities.

The overtime session produced limited scoring opportunities for both teams, who displayed visible signs of fatigue, and managed only two shots apiece in the extra 20 minutes.

Freshman Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) produced the best scoring opportunity for either squad in the waning minutes of the second overtime, turning from 20 yards out on the left wing and sending a bending ball that hit the crossbar and bounced over the goal.  Last week's Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week finished with six shots.

The Lady Bears held a slim 13-11 advantage in shots for the contest, but Brooklyn held the upper hand in shots on goal, 9-4, with Farinella making nine saves to preserve her second shutout in as many games.

The Lady Bears return to the field on Thursday, September 20 squaring off against sister campus St. Joseph's (L.I.) for a road match at the SJC Outdoor Complex starting at 7 p.m.
