Women's Soccer Stymied by Cedar Crest

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Despite ten saves by senior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team fell, 3-0, to hosts Cedar Crest College on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Cedar Crest College Tournament.

A day after playing with only nine players the Lady Bears (0-2) had 11 active players but the Falcons (1-2) took command of the game setting the tempo early yet they were unable to capitalize as the game was scoreless heading into intermission with Farinella playing the role of defensive stopper as she made six saves. However, with no substitutes available fatigue began to set in during the second half and Cedar Crest took advantage.

The Falcons broke through early in the second half on a shot off the foot of Alexis Baxter that came less than 20 seconds after a Falcons corner kick. St. Joseph's responded with their first two shots on goal by senior Daniela Semilia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) in the 49th minute and senior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) in the 58th minute but were unable to string together any other offensive marches down the field.

In the 58th minute of action the Falcons would strike again on a shot by Kim Incontrera that found its way past Farinella putting Cedar Crest up 2-0. The Falcons continued to dominate the action with them controlling possession of the ball on the Lady Bears end for the remainder of the game.

Cedar Crest would receive an insurance goal in the 75th minute from Karlee Hantz off a pass from Allison Rittle that gave the Falcons a commanding 3-0 lead and would not look back as they continued to dictate the action ending the contest with an overwhelming 24-3 shot advantage.

The Lady Bears return to New York as they travel to borough rival Brooklyn College on Wednesday, September 11th with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
